October Anniversaries

This is always an emotional month for our family.mother son dance

It was nine years ago in October that we found out my mom had Stage IV breast cancer. Three days later, my brother got married. Only our immediate family knew about mom’s cancer and it was hard to put on a happy face with that news lurking in our hearts.

When my brother danced with mom for the mother/son dance, tears streamed down everyone’s cheeks, but for those of us who knew that mom had limited time left, the tears stung a little harder.

Four years ago today, I dipped my father-in-law’s drink sponge in a can of Michelob Golden Draft and dabbed it on his lips. Mike was dying of cancer and I wanted to give him something he enjoyed before he left this earth. He smacked his lips and tried to make a sound. I took that as a “thank you.” Later that evening, Mike died surrounded by family and friends.

Fall and hunting season was always Mike’s favorite. I have to believe that he died in the fall so the happy memories of this time of year would help us through our sadness.

Three years ago today, Jaxson came home after living for 93 days in the NICU. It was a month before his due date. Doctors were surprised he was ready to come home so soon. Most preemies stay in the hospital at least until their due date. It was practically unheard of for a 23 weeker to come home before the due date.

There was only one explanation: Jax had Guardian Angels looking out for him.
