Another Surgery on the Horizon

Preparing for another surgery, but still thankful…

Gang, we didn’t want this to happen! We had hoped that Jax’s last surgery would be his last, but unfortunately that’s not in the cards for us right now.

Jax’s hypospadias was the most severe case his doctor has ever seen, so we knew that Jax would need multiple surgeries. After the last surgery, the doctor was pretty confident that it would  be the last, but unfortunately Jax’s skin had another idea. Surgery number four to repair the hypospadias will happen in April. (This will bring Jax to a total of eight surgeries in the past three years. 😦 )

We’re waiting until spring to give his tissue time to heal completely before trying the repair again.

The good thing is that the next MRI to check on Jax’s brain tumor is scheduled for April, too, so we will be able to combine both procedures into one anesthesia event and hospital trip.

As with past hypospadias surgeries, Jax will have a catheter for two weeks following the surgery. This.Is.NOT.fun. Jax is extremely sensitive to bladder spasms and he is in terrible pain following surgery. It breaks this mama’s heart to see my boy hurting and I’m not looking forward to it at all.

So, that’s on the horizon. We’ll just tuck the fear and stress away for the next few months and enjoy our winter. We have grand plans for sledding and snowmen!

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, here are just a few of the things I am thankful for:

  1. It could be worse and we’re thankful for great surgeons and good hospitals and a happy little boy who actually gets excited to go to his “hops-ital.” Jax’s laughs make these trips a lot easier.
  2. I am thankful that we are no longer in isolation and that we get to spend the holidays with our families this year.
  3. I am thankful for a warm house and food in our bellies.
  4. I am thankful for people who are willing to lend a hand to others who are struggling. I am thankful for those who are willing to accept help.
  5. I am thankful for YOU!

We hope those of you in the United States have a happy Thanksgiving! What are you thankful for?
