Happy Little Haikus

Since I’ve been in a little bit of a funk lately, I thought I’d jump out of my comfort zone and do something crazy – like try to write haikus. A haiku is a 17-syllable verse form consisting of three metrical units of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. I had a lot of fun, and I want to keep doing it!

I got the syllables down, now I just need to work on the imagery. Want to try with me? Here’s some information on writing haikus. Try your hand in the comments!

Brave
“Hey, watch this!” he said.
Stuffed animal pile squashed flat,
JUMP! You’re too brave, boy.

The sun never goes down on cool...
The sun never goes down on cool…

Bedtime
Mom, don’t go away!
I’m scared in my bed tonight.
Sing Twinkle, Twinkle?

Sounds
Beep beep goes the car,
Whee goes the fire engine,
Watch out!, says the boy.

Manners
I WANT A MOVIE!
Jaxson, be more polite, please.
I WANT IT NOW… PLEASE!

Purpose
The sun shines on him,
My heart isn’t as heavy.
I sigh, and move on.
